Surface deformation-based analysis of regional shape variations of hippocampus in children with FAS

چکیده
Introduction Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) – a condition caused by chronic maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy is estimated to be the most common preventable cause of learning disability worldwide [1]. The effect of prenatal alcohol exposure on poorer infant growth is seen not only in children with full FAS but also in alcohol-exposed children who lack the characteristic facial dysmorphology [2-4]. Recent studies have reported very heavy alcohol use during pregnancy [5,6] and a high prevalence of FAS in the Cape Coloured community in the Western Cape Province of South Africa [7,8], with one of the highest incidences of FAS in the world. MRI studies of children and adults with Fetal Acohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) have demonstrated disproportionately smaller cerebellum, parietal lobe, caudate nucleus, and corpus callosum [9]. Structural anomalies have also been documented in the perisylvian cortices of the parietal and temporal lobes. To date, shape analyses have only been performed of the corpus callosum [10]. We report initial results using shape analysis to analyse structural variations in the hippocampus.

Design and Modeling of a New Type of Tactile Sensor Based on the Deformation of an Elastic Membrane
This paper presents the design and modeling of a flexible tactile sensor, capable of detecting the 2D surface texture image, contact-force estimation and stiffness of the sensed object. The sensor is made of polymer materials. It consists of a cylindrical chamber for pneumatic actuation and a membrane with a mesa structure. The inner radius of the cylindrical chamber is 2cm and its outer radius...
متن کاملShape Analysis on Subcortical Structures with its Application in Children with Autism
Introduction Template-based shape analysis has been widely used to assess structural shape abnormalities (volume loss and its location) in a variety of neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric diseases. Thus far, most existing morphometric shape analysis has largely focused on a single structure, such as the hippocampus, or thalamus. Nevertheless, there is considerable morphological variation in ...
متن کاملHippocampal shape analysis of Alzheimer disease based on machine learning methods.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Alzheimer disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive dementia. The hippocampus is particularly vulnerable to damage at the very earliest stages of AD. This article seeks to evaluate critical AD-associated regional changes in the hippocampus using machine learning methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS High-resolution MR images were acquired from 19...
متن کاملMulti-structure network shape analysis via normal surface momentum maps
We present a shape analysis pipeline for the assessment of anatomical variations in subcortical networks in MR images. The shape analysis pipeline injects the global shape properties of the CFA subcortical template into the subcortical parcellations generated from FreeSurfer via large deformation diffeomorphic metric mapping (LDDMM). Examples are shown for this injection in several subcortical ...
متن کاملNonlinear Vibration Analysis of Composite Plates with SMA Wires, Considering Instantaneous Variations of the Martensite Volume Fraction
In the past few years, extensive improvements have been accomplished in reinforcing the structures through using shape memory alloys (SMAs). These materials absorb or dissipate energy through establishing a reversible hysteresis loop during a cyclic mechanical loading. This unique characteristic of the SMAs has made them appropriate for sensing, actuation, absorbing the impact energy, and vibra...
